Elucidation of PFAS Transport and Adsorption–Desorption Characteristics in Soil
Perfluoroalkyl substances, commonly known as PFAS, are a group of synthetic chemical substances characterized by their ability to repel water and oil. They have been widely used in various aspects of daily life and industry, including water-repellent treatments, firefighting foams, and coating materials. However, PFAS are extremely resistant to degradation and are therefore often referred to as “forever chemicals.” Once released into the environment, they can persist for long periods, accumulate in soil, and spread into groundwater. As a result, they may contaminate sources of drinking water, and their potential impacts on human health have become a global concern.
To prevent water contamination by PFAS, it is important to identify, at an early stage, where the contamination is spreading from. However, because PFAS move through soil and groundwater in complex ways, identifying their sources is not easy. Field investigations also require considerable time, labor, and cost.
Therefore, this study aims to use computer-based analysis to clarify how PFAS move through soil and how they attach to and detach from interfaces between soil, water, and air. Since soil contains not only water but also air, it is important to understand how PFAS behave at the boundaries between water and soil, and between water and air. In this study, numerical analysis methods that represent the internal structure of soil in a simplified manner will be used to investigate the transport, adsorption, and desorption behavior of PFAS. In addition, the analysis will account for the phenomenon in which differences in PFAS concentration affect interfacial movement, thereby enabling simulations that more closely reflect actual soil environments.
Through this approach, the study will quantitatively evaluate the rate of PFAS adsorption and the range over which reactions occur in unsaturated soil. Furthermore, by utilizing data obtained from numerical simulations, the study also aims to predict, through machine learning, how PFAS spread and where they are likely to remain. In doing so, information related to actual environmental conditions, such as soil properties, topography, and subsurface water flow, will be incorporated.
Ultimately, this research aims to develop a method that can rapidly predict how PFAS may spread, even in cases where large-scale field investigations are difficult to conduct. The findings are expected to contribute to the early detection of PFAS contamination sources and to the prevention of PFAS intrusion into groundwater and drinking water sources.
