Visualizing Vortex Dynamics around Perforated Heave Plates
This project focuses on resolving and characterizing the three-dimensional vortex structures generated around oscillating perforated heave plates in low-KC oscillatory flow. Despite the recognized importance of heave plates in suppressing vertical motion of floating offshore wind turbine (FOWT) foundations, the simultaneous spatial and temporal evolution of perforation-induced jets and outer-edge vortices has not been systematically visualized. High-fidelity CFD simulations are conducted using an Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian (ALE) finite-volume framework in Code_Saturne, with results validated against Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) data from the ENSTA–EDF water-tank experiments. By comparing vorticity fields from both methods, the project aims to clarify how hole geometry, plate thickness, and edge shape govern vortex formation, interaction, and energy dissipation over an oscillation cycle. The emphasis is on physical intuition rather than engineering correlations, providing the fundamental flow insight needed to connect plate geometry to damping performance.
