Near-Field Control and Energy Harvesting for Self-Powered Sensors in Capacitive Dynamic Charging Roads

Capacitive dynamic charging roads can transfer power to Electric Vehicles (EVs) while driving. In road-integrated Capacitive Power Transfer (CPT) systems, near-field E-Fields around road electrodes are usually treated as leakage fields to be suppressed for safety. However, previous studies suggest that such electric fields can be controlled and even harvested to power low-power wireless sensors.

This project explores a new use of controlled near-field energy in capacitive charging roads. Instead of simply eliminating leakage fields, the near-field energy is harvested to power self-powered roadside micro-sensors. By combining CPT, field control, and energy harvesting, this project aims to support smart road infrastructure, green mobility, and environmental monitoring (Fig. 1).

Coupling-Structure Optimization and Broadband Matching for Capacitive Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer in EVs

Electric Vehicles (EVs) are important for reducing carbon emissions from road transportation. However, limited charging infrastructure and long charging waiting times still cause range anxiety, especially during long-distance driving. Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer can supply power to EVs while they are moving and is a promising solution to this issue. Capacitive power transfer (CPT) enables thin and lightweight road-embedded electrodes and can reduce heating caused by metallic foreign objects compared with inductive power transfer.

The purpose of this doctoral research is to establish a design methodology for efficient, safe, and stable CPT-based dynamic charging systems, especially under vehicle misalignment and resonance-frequency shifts (Fig. 2). This research contributes to affordable and clean energy infrastructure for future EV transportation.
