Construction of an optimal design methodology for SOECs using machine learning

This study aims to develop a machine learning-based optimal design methodology for solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) stacks to improve energy efficiency and durability. Conventional multiphysics simulations are computationally expensive, making it difficult to evaluate a large number of design and operating conditions. To address this limitation, an artificial neural network is trained using numerical simulation data to construct a surrogate model for rapid prediction of SOEC performance. Furthermore, multi-objective optimization is performed considering energy efficiency, temperature and current density uniformity, and steam utilization to identify optimal stack configurations and operating conditions.

Elucidation of electrochemical reaction mechanisms in H₂O–CO₂ co-electrolysis of SOEC and construction of numerical analysis methods

Solid oxide electrolysis cells (SOEC) operating above 600 °C enable highly efficient H₂O–CO₂ co-electrolysis to simultaneously produce hydrogen and carbon monoxide. This research elucidates the underlying reaction mechanisms including the water-gas shift reaction and thermal stress effects, and constructs 3D numerical models to establish design guidelines for enhanced SOEC efficiency and durability.
