A solid oxide electrolysis cell (SOEC) can use electricity to split steam and carbon dioxide at the same time, producing hydrogen and carbon monoxide — syngas, the starting point for synthetic fuels and chemicals. This co-electrolysis is highly efficient, but inside the cell the electrochemical reactions are coupled with chemical reactions between the gases, and how these play out locally, from the gas inlet to the outlet, has remained poorly understood. Most measurements see only the cell as a whole.
K2-SPRING fellow Zhanyi Xiang, of the Department of Hydrogen Energy Systems, Graduate School of Engineering, addressed this together with Atsushi Ryudo, Hironori Nakajima and his supervisor Prof. Kohei ITO. The team built a planar cell whose oxygen electrode is divided into three segments — upstream, midstream and downstream — and measured local current, local temperature, outlet gas composition and impedance at 650 °C while varying the ratio of steam to CO2 in the feed.
Raising the CO2 fraction lowered the current density and increased the cell's resistance. With steam in the feed, current fell steadily from upstream to downstream as the reactants were consumed — but in a steam-free, CO2-rich feed, the midstream segment carried more current than the upstream one, a pattern the impedance data link to lower ion-conduction and gas-diffusion resistance in that region. Temperature measurements showed that this CO2-rich condition switches from absorbing to releasing heat at a voltage well below the theoretical value, a sign of extra heat from chemical reactions. Gas analysis confirmed that the reverse water–gas shift reaction takes place even without electrolysis, and microscopy of the disassembled cell found carbon deposits in the fuel electrode.
Together, the results point to the reverse water–gas shift reaction and carbon deposition as likely contributors to the uneven temperature and current inside the cell. They also give direct, local experimental evidence for checking computer models of SOEC co-electrolysis — the focus of Xiang's doctoral research, which aims to build three-dimensional numerical models and design guidelines for more efficient and durable cells. The work acknowledges support from K2-SPRING, and the article is open access.
