Tomomi Shoda, a fellow of the Q-ENERGY Innovator Unit and a doctoral student in the Graduate School of Economics under Prof. Shigemi Kagawa, has been elected Best Flash-Session Presenter and awarded the Fellows Prize by the International Input–Output Association (IIOA). The prize was conferred at the 32nd International Input–Output Conference in Seville, Spain (22–26 June 2026) for her presentation, “A Global Multi-Regional Input–Output Model Incorporating Container Shipping Networks.”
CO₂ emissions arising from international goods trade within global supply chains (GSCs) account for roughly 23% of the world’s total CO₂ emissions, making emission reductions across GSCs an urgent challenge. Conventional environmentally-extended multi-regional input–output (EE-MRIO) analysis is a powerful method for assessing the environmental burdens tied to “production” and “consumption” in GSCs, but it has a key limitation: it does not adequately capture the physical structure of transport.
Shoda’s study analyses the container-cargo network using graph theory, drawing on big data that records the voyages of container ships in detail. By incorporating the results into a global multi-regional input–output table, she builds a framework that comprehensively evaluates CO₂ emissions across “production, transport, and consumption” — closing the gap that earlier models left in the transport stage.
