Autonomous vehicles hold significant potential for improving transportation energy efficiency, but realising that potential requires motion planning strategies that are both energy-optimal and adaptable to the preferences of individual passengers. Generic lane-changing manoeuvres designed without regard for driving style often conflict with user expectations, reducing the practicality of autonomous systems in real-world deployment.

Zifei Nie and Hooman Farzaneh introduce a personalised lane-change strategy using trajectory planning and tracking technologies, combined with a driving style identification module trained on real driving data. Nonlinear model predictive control is used to generate energy-optimal trajectories matched to the identified style. The approach achieved energy savings of 2.87%–5.73% compared to human driver manoeuvres, while maintaining safety and personalisation.
