The 2023 summer camp was the most geographically varied yet, combining a group work session in Kirishima with industrial visits to two contrasting energy and technology sites. Six research teams — from Economics, Materials, Chemistry, Built Environment, and Data & Batteries — participated, presenting Carbon-Neutral Campus proposals during the Day 1 group session.
Day 2 featured a visit to Kyocera Corporation's research and development centre in Kirishima, where fellows received lectures on industrial energy use and technology. On Day 3, the group travelled to Yakushima Island to visit Yakushima Denko — a company operating one of Japan's first carbon-neutral electricity systems, powered almost entirely by hydropower from the island's mountain rivers.
