Dr. Yulu Chen, a graduate of Kyushu University supported by the Q-ENERGY Fellowship, has received the 2025 Best Paper Award from Building and Environment, one of the leading journals in building science and environmental engineering. The award is given to just five papers per year from a pool of approximately 10,000 submissions — a recognition that places the work among the most impactful contributions to the field in 2025.
The awarded paper presents a roof-integrated solar heat collection and humidity control (SCHC) system that combines solar-driven air convection with porous hygrothermal materials. The system is designed to improve winter indoor comfort — maintaining higher temperatures and humidity — while simultaneously reducing HVAC energy consumption. The study introduced innovative approaches to modelling moisture transfer and validated the design through both experimental measurement and numerical simulation.
The paper was co-authored with Prof. Akihito Ozaki, Dr. Haksung Lee, and Prof. Zao Li, and published in Building and Environment, Volume 287, Part A (January 2026).
